How to choose between dentures and implants

There are a few options when it comes to replacing missing teeth.

If you are missing one or more teeth, you might be wondering what your best option is. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments available that are designed to effectively restore oral function, as well as the appearance of your smile. Dental dentures and implants are both great options, each with their own benefits. Both treatments support the facial muscles and help to restore one’s ability to chew and speak properly. Read on to find out how dentures and implants differ, and how to know which treatment is best for you…

What are dentures?
Dentures are removeable teeth that can be used to replace just a few missing teeth, or a full arch of teeth on the lower or upper jaw, depending on one’s needs. If you choose to have dentures, your dentist will make an impression of your gums so that your dentures can be fabricated in a specialised dental laboratory. Your dentist will also examine the alignment of your jaws, as well as your bite to ensure that your dentures fit correctly and will properly restore oral function.

When your dentures have been fabricated and returned from the laboratory, your dentist will place them in your mouth and make any necessary adjustments. Your dentures will be made to fit comfortably and will look just like natural teeth.

What are dental implants?
Implants are made from biocompatible titanium and are placed directly into the jawbone. During a process known as osseointegration, implants fuse with the jawbone to become a permanent restoration. It can take around three months for the jaw to heal around an implant.

Patients who are not suited to traditional dentures may opt for implant-supported dentures. These types of dentures are available as permanent dentures in implants, removable dentures on implants and implant retained dentures.

How does the maintenance compare?
If you are trying to choose between implants and dentures, it is worth considering how you will need to take care of each restoration. In the case of dental implants, you will need to stick to your normal oral hygiene routine — this means brushing and flossing every day, and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups and cleans.

If you choose to have dentures, it is important that you commit to a daily maintenance routine. This includes soaking your dentures overnight and cleaning them on a daily basis. Dentures should be removed after eating so that you can brush them and remove any plaque and food particles.

Another important factor to consider is that traditional dentures need to be refitted every now and then as your bite can change over time. Dental implants, however, are considered permanent restorations and generally don’t need to be replaced.

The treatment that you choose will depend on a number of factors, including your personal preference, budget, age and lifestyle. If you’re not sure which treatment is best for you, we recommend that you come in for a consultation so that your dentist can advise you on the course of action that suits you, and address any questions or concerns you might have.
