While conventional dentures are often a great solution for individuals who would like to replace missing teeth and restore oral function, the reality is that not everyone is suited to the treatment. For those who don’t want removable dentures, implant-supported dentures are an alternative well worth considering. What does the process involve?

Much like conventional dentures, implant-supported dentures are designed to replace missing teeth and improve both the function and aesthetic of the smile. While conventional dentures are removable appliances, implant supported dentures are attached to titanium implants that are surgically placed in the jaw. 

If you choose to have implant-supported dentures placed, you will undergo implant surgery. During the procedure, titanium implants are inserted directly into your jawbone. Once the implants have been placed, it takes around three months for the jaw to heal and for the implants to fuse with the bone in a process known as osseointegration. Once the implants have fused with the bone, your final implant retained dentures will be fabricated and fitted.  

What are the options? 

When it comes to implant-supported dentures, there are a few options to choose from. These include removable dentures on implants; and implant-retained dentures fixed. Find out below about how do dental implants work with dentures.

Permanent dentures on implants, also known as fixed dentures on implants, achieve a natural-looking and feeling result. Once your implants have been placed and your jaw has healed, your custom-made denture will be secured to the dental implants. Permanent dentures on implants are only removed at dental appointments, and function just like natural teeth. 

Removable dentures on implants are suitable for use on the lower jaw, and involve the use of a minimum of two implants. The front of the denture is attached to the implants, while the back of the denture rests on the gums. The denture is removable, and clips onto the dental implants. This means that you can take it out for regular cleaning. 

Implant-retained dentures are attached to two or more dental implants. During the process, a denture is attached to implants, which provides good stability and support for the jaw. Implant retained dentures can replace an entire row of teeth, but are also available as partial dentures. 

Who is suited to implant dentures? 

Ideal candidates for implant-supported dentures should have enough healthy jawbone to support implants. It is also best that patients who undergo the treatment are in good overall health and have healthy gums. Individuals who want to have implant dentures placed should also be committed to practicing proper oral hygiene in order to maintain good oral health in the long-term — this means brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental check-ups.
