Are dentures safe?
Dentures are considered a safe and effective solution for missing teeth.
Your teeth are an integral part of your life, and it’s essential that you keep them healthy. If, however, you are missing some of your natural teeth, there are ways in which you can effectively restore the function and aesthetic of your smile. Dentures remain a popular choice, and have proven safe and effective for many people around the world. Read on to find out how they work and how to take care of them to ensure optimal oral health in the long-term…
What does the treatment involve?
Dentures are prosthetic teeth that are custom-made to fit comfortably. One of the benefits of dentures is that they are suitable for most people — unlike dental implants, they don’t rely on sufficient jaw bone for support.
Dentures can be used to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaws, or just a few missing teeth, depending on your needs. If you would like to have dentures fitted, your dentist will begin by taking an impression of your gums. They will also examine your bite and the alignment of your jaw. Your dentures will be fabricated in a laboratory before they are fitted. When you have your dentures fitted, your dentist will check that they fit comfortably and that you are satisfied with their appearance. Any necessary adjustments will be made before you leave your dentist’s office.
How are dentures maintained?
An important part of ensuring that your dentures are both safe and effective is to practice proper dental hygiene habits every day. This means cleaning your dentures every day — you should ideally remove them after every meal for brushing. It is also advisable that you brush your gums gently each time that you remove your dentures in order to get rid of any adhesive that may be stuck. Be sure to remove your dentures for overnight soaking when you go to bed.
If you have dentures, it is a good idea to see your dentist for regular check-ups so that any adjustments can be made as it is possible for your bite to change over time.
Are there any possible complications?
Although dentures are considered a safe solution for missing teeth, there are some possible complications that can occur. For example, there are reports that dentures can result in nerve damage. You may have heard of the condition “denture-bruxism,” which is when someone grinds their teeth at night due to having a full set of upper and lower dental appliances. This causes severe wear on the natural tooth enamel over time, resulting in potential pain and discomfort. In order to avoid these complications, you should ensure that your dentures fit correctly by visiting your dentist regularly.
Other possible problems associated with dentures include gum and mouth irritation; mouth infections; dentures that move around and feel unstable; and issues with eating and speaking. If you find yourself experiencing any of these problems, or any discomfort at all when wearing your dentures, be sure to see your dentist as soon as possible as you might need to have your appliances adjusted or replaced.
