Are dentures hard to get used to?

It can take some time to adjust the feeling of new dentures.

Dentures are often a great solution for individuals who would like to replace missing teeth and restore their oral function. But the reality is that it can take some time to get used to the feeling of new dentures. You might feel some discomfort when your dentures are first fitted, or you may struggle with chewing and biting while you adjust. Read on for our tips on adapting to life with dentures…

Expect some side effects

When you first have dentures fitted, it is completely normal to experience some discomfort. It is helpful to begin the process knowing this — and preparing yourself for a period of adjustment. It may feel strange when you talk and eat, but these things will become easier with time.

If you feel pain when you first wear your dentures, we encourage you to speak to your dentist. Sometimes, adjustments can help to alleviate any soreness. It can also be helpful to remove your dentures every few hours while you are still getting used to them. This will give your gums and jaw a break and provide you with some relief.

As you adjust to the feeling of your new dentures, it is important that you stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods. Don’t compromise on nutrition though — mashed fruits and vegetables, homemade soups, and yoghurt are all nourishing options.

Take your dentist’s advice

If you want to get used to your new dentures as quickly as possible, we encourage you to stick to the treatment plan provided to you by your dentist. This means attending any appointments that your dentist recommends for adjustments or check-ups, and taking any medication that has been prescribed to you for pain or inflammation.

It’s also very important that you see your dentist for regular check-ups, especially while you are still getting used to your dentures. You should also commit to a good oral hygiene routine at home — keeping your dentures clean will go a long way in maintaining your overall health.

Consider facial exercises

It can be helpful to strengthen your facial muscles when you first have your dentures placed. Building your cheek muscles helps to give you more control when chewing and biting, which can make your eating experience generally more comfortable.

If you experience persistent cheek pain that doesn’t subside over time, it is possible that your denture don’t fit properly. In this case, it’s advisable to see your dentist so that your dentures can be readjusted for increased comfort.

Try a denture adhesive

If you experience irritation after first having your dentures fitted, you may benefit from using a specially formulated adhesive. Denture adhesives help to improve stability and prevent food particles and bacteria from getting stuck between your dentures and your gums. Adhesives can also be helpful for individuals who suffer from dry mouth.

Although a denture adhesive is no substitute for ill-fitting dentures, it can be helpful in the early stages when you are still getting used to the feeling of wearing denture. Chat to your dentist about creams and adhesives that may be suitable for you.
