Dentures Frequently Asked Questions
How do I take care of dental prosthetics?
Take care of dentures the way you take care of your real teeth. Clean them daily, get them monitored and professionally cleaned regularly.
Just like real teeth, dentures need to be kept clean in order to prevent infections, or the loss of any more teeth. The only difference is that you shouldn’t use any products that are abrasive or harmful like bleach or toothpaste as this might break them down.
Ask your dental prosthetist about how best to clean them, and if you need help cleaning, be sure to consult with us.
What are the different types of dentures, which one is right for me?
Removable dentures are standard, precision, and immediate.
Partial dentures which can be worn by someone who still has existing real teeth. Implant dentures offer a more permanent solution because tiny rods are placed into the jaw bone, and then dentures are either fitted onto the implant or permanently fused to it.
If you want something that you don’t need to remove all the time and something that feels real, the implant route is the best. If you’re looking for something removable and more standardised, the removable dentures would be suitable.
How does missing teeth affect speech?
When a patient is missing some teeth, it doesn’t just affect how they look and eat, it affects how they speak too.
Our teeth are vital in us being able to formulate that sounds that make up words, so not having teeth changes how a patient speaks. If you think about how a child sounds different when they lose their front teeth, it’s easy to see the impact the absence one or two missing teeth has.
This is why it’s so vital that we replace teeth when we lose them. We can replace them with dental implants or dentures.
