Are dentures right for you?
There are a number of benefits to choosing dentures for those who are missing some or all of their teeth.
Dentures are a highly effective solution for missing teeth and can help restore both the function and appearance of one’s smile. But are they right for you? And are dentures a good option for you? Every patient is different, and fortunately, there are many types of dentures available — read on to find out more about each type of denture and which one suits you best…
Removable dentures
Removable dentures are a popular choice and are available in a few different types. These include standard, precision and immediate dentures. Each of these denture types offers their own set of benefits, and the type you choose will depend on your particular lifestyle, budget and oral health needs.
Standard removable dentures are cost-effective and can be used to replace a whole arch of missing teeth. Precision dentures, on the other hand, tend to be better-fitting than standard dentures. Thus, the planning stage is more involved, and the denture construction requires an additional step to ensure optimal strength and durability.
Immediate dentures are suited to patients who need to have some teeth extracted and don’t want to spend time without teeth while they wait for their dentures to be made. Immediate dentures can be treated as a temporary solution. They can be replaced with standard or precision dentures at a later stage, or they can be relined so that they can be worn comfortably in the long-term.

Partial dentures
If you have some remaining natural teeth, you might consider partial dentures. Removable partial dentures are available in three types: acrylic, metal and flexible.
Acrylic partial dentures are affordable and very popular and consist of an acrylic base plate and metal clasps. Metal partial dentures can be made from chrome and flexible acrylic materials and blend in well with natural teeth. Flexible partial dentures are made from thermoplastic material, which is very flexible and helps achieve an aesthetically pleasing result.

Implant dentures
While removable dentures are often a highly effective treatment, the reality is that not everyone is suited to them. If you would prefer implant-supported dentures, you will need to come in for day surgery. During the procedure, one or more implants are placed directly into your jaw. You will then need to wait around three months for your jaw to heal and for the implants to fully fuse with the bone. When the healing process is complete, the construction of your implant-retained denture can begin.
When it comes to implant-supported dentures, there are a few options available. These include permanent dentures on implants and removable dentures on implants. The type that is best for you will depend on your particular needs, and your prosthodontist will be able to advise you on the most suitable treatment for you.
